Why consider a watering system for planters

Ideally plants should be watered when they need water, not when we think they need watering.  Also, over-watering or under-watering plants can negatively affect their health.   And the regular and frequent watering of plants can be time-consuming and expensive in terms of labour and resources, particularly in commercial applications.

U.S. company, Planter Technology, has developed container watering systems that enable the automatic or manual-controlled watering of plants.

The advantage of the Planter-Technology watering systems is that they mimic nature’s wet-dry cycle of rain followed by dry periods.  This is important as the wet-dry cycle allows plant roots to aerate regularly, and it prevents water-saturation from over-watering which encourages root-rot.  Also, plants are watered by sub-irrigation – from the bottom up.  This enables more even root development, stronger root systems and longer intervals between watering.

The benefits of the Planter Technology irrigation systems include:

  • Healthier plants that live longer
  • Plants are maintained easily, reliably, and with a minimum of effort.
  • Time required for regular watering of plants is significantly reduced (typically two to four weeks for interior plants, and one to three weeks for exterior plants with the Manual Container Irrigation System, or eliminated altogether with the Autofill automatic system.
  • Cost savings -- in commercial applications, the Planter-Technology watering systems greatly reduce labour costs for watering and maintaining plants.

Quatro Design is an authorized agent for Planter Technology container irrigation systems which can be fitted to Quatro planter boxes and bowls.  There are two versions of the Planter-Technology irrigation technology:
